How to fix scratches on leather
Short answer
Light surface scratches on full-grain leather often disappear if you rub them with a clean fingertip — warmth and the natural oils in your skin blend the fibres back together — followed by a little leather conditioner. Deeper scratches that break the surface need a colour-matched leather cream or a leather repairer.
Most scratches on good leather are shallower than they look.
Check how deep it is
Run a fingernail across it. If it does not catch, it is a surface scuff that will buff out. If it catches, or the colour underneath shows, the finish is broken and needs colour.
Light scratches
- Rub the scratch in small circles with a clean fingertip for a minute.
- Apply a small amount of leather conditioner and buff with a soft cloth.
- On full-grain leather, remaining faint marks usually blend into the patina over a few weeks.
Deeper scratches
Apply a colour-matched leather cream or balm with a cloth, let it dry and buff; repeat in thin layers. Gouges that remove leather need a filler, which is a job for a leather repairer. Avoid shoe polish on bags, as it can rub off onto clothes.
Textured leathers
Pebbled and croco-embossed leathers hide scratches in their texture. Clean them with a dry cloth and condition sparingly — product sitting in the grooves looks worse than the scratch.
Frequently asked
Can a hairdryer remove leather scratches?
Gentle heat is sometimes suggested, but it risks drying and discolouring the leather. We recommend the fingertip and conditioner method instead.
Will scratches become part of the patina?
On full-grain leather, yes — light marks soften and blend into the colour with use.
