Can you wear suede in the rain?
Short answer
You can wear suede in a light shower if it has been treated with a suede protector spray, but avoid heavy rain. If it gets wet, blot — do not rub — let it dry naturally away from heat, then brush the nap back up with a suede brush once it is completely dry.
Suede is less delicate than its reputation, as long as it is protected.
Protect it first
Spray new suede with a protector and let it dry overnight before wearing it. Re-apply every few months, or as the product’s instructions say.
If you get caught in the rain
- Blot off the water with a dry cloth.
- Stuff bags with paper; hang jackets on a shaped hanger.
- Let it dry at room temperature — no radiator, no hairdryer.
- Brush the nap once it is fully dry.
Water spots
Lightly and evenly dampen the whole area around the spot with a clean cloth, blot, dry naturally, then brush. Evening out the moisture prevents a ring from forming.
Frequently asked
Does protector spray make suede waterproof?
No. It makes suede water-resistant, so light rain beads off instead of soaking in.
Can I wear a suede jacket in winter?
Yes on dry days. Keep it away from road salt and slush, which can leave white marks.
