What is suede?
Short answer
Suede is real leather finished on its inner side, which is buffed to raise a short, soft nap. It is lighter and more flexible than smooth leather and has a velvety, matte look, but it absorbs water and stains more easily, so it needs protecting and regular brushing.
Suede is a finish, not a separate material.
How suede is made
The hide is split, and the inner (flesh) side is buffed until the fibres stand up into a nap. Nubuck, which looks similar, is made by buffing the outer grain side instead, and is firmer and more durable.
Pros and cons
- Soft, light and flexible — ideal for totes and overshirts.
- A warm, matte, relaxed look.
- Absorbs water and oil more easily than smooth leather.
- Needs a protector spray and brushing.
Basic care
Spray it with a suede protector before first use, brush it regularly, lift marks with a suede eraser and keep it out of heavy rain.
