How long does a leather bag last?
Short answer
A well-made full-grain leather bag used every day can last well over a decade with basic care — often much longer. Its lifespan depends more on stitching, hardware and care than on the leather itself: clean it, condition it once or twice a year and store it properly.
Leather rarely fails first. The parts around it do.
What wears out first
- Strap attachments and handles, which take the load.
- Corners and the base, which rub on floors and tables.
- Zips and clasps.
- Stitching along stress points.
Why the grade matters
Full-grain leather keeps its strongest surface fibres, so wear softens it rather than exposing a weaker layer. Coated lower grades can look fine for a few years and then crack or peel.
Care that adds years
- Do not overload it; heavy loads stretch straps and seams.
- Wipe it regularly and condition it once or twice a year.
- Store it stuffed with paper, out of direct sun.
- Fix small problems — a loose stitch, a sticky zip — before they grow.
Frequently asked
Does leather get better with age?
Full-grain leather does: it softens and develops a patina.
Can a leather bag be repaired?
Yes. Straps, stitching, zips and edges can all be repaired by a leather repairer.
