How to clean a leather bag

Short answer

Empty the bag and brush out the lining, then wipe the outside with a soft dry cloth. For marks, use a cloth barely dampened with water and a drop of mild soap, work in small circles, wipe with a clean damp cloth and let it air-dry away from heat. Finish with a thin coat of leather conditioner.

This works for smooth, full-grain and pebbled leather. Suede needs a different method.

What you need

  • Two soft, lint-free cloths
  • Water and a mild, unscented soap — or a dedicated leather cleaner
  • A soft brush for seams and corners
  • Leather conditioner for afterwards

Step by step

  • Empty every pocket and shake or brush out the lining.
  • Dry-wipe the whole bag to remove dust and grit, which is what scratches leather.
  • Dampen a cloth — it should feel almost dry — add a drop of mild soap and work on marks in small circles.
  • Wipe off the soap with a second, clean damp cloth.
  • Stuff the bag with paper and let it dry at room temperature.
  • Once dry, rub in a thin coat of conditioner and buff off the excess.

Always test a cleaner on a hidden spot first, such as the underside of a strap. Dyes vary, and a product that is fine on one colour can lift another.

What to avoid

  • Baby wipes, alcohol, vinegar and household sprays: they strip the finish and leave dull patches.
  • Soaking the leather or putting the bag in a washing machine.
  • Hairdryers, radiators or direct sun to speed up drying — heat makes leather stiff and can crack it.

Stubborn stains

Grease and oil: cover the spot with cornflour or talc, leave it overnight to draw the oil out, then brush it off. Ink and dye transfer from jeans rarely come out at home without damage; a leather repairer is the safer choice.

Frequently asked

How often should I clean a leather bag?

Dry-wipe it every week or two and do a full clean and condition every few months, or whenever it looks dull.

Can I use baby wipes on leather?

No. Most contain alcohol or cleaning agents that dry out leather and damage its finish.

Does this method work on suede?

No. Suede should be brushed and treated with a suede eraser, not wiped with water and soap.
