Is leather waterproof?
Short answer
No. Leather is water-resistant, not waterproof: it sheds light rain for a while, but prolonged soaking lets water in and can leave marks. A protector spray and wiping off rain promptly keep full-grain leather in good shape; suede is more sensitive and is best kept dry.
A leather bag or jacket can handle a rainy walk. It cannot handle being soaked.
How each leather copes
- Smooth full-grain: sheds light rain; may spot if soaked. Dries well slowly.
- Pebbled: similar to full-grain, and the texture hides water spots.
- Croco-embossed: the pressed, sealed surface sheds water; wipe it dry.
- Suede: absorbs water quickly and can spot or stiffen. Keep it for dry days.
If your bag gets wet
- Blot off water with a dry cloth; do not rub.
- Empty it and stuff it with paper to hold its shape.
- Let it dry at room temperature — never on a radiator or with a hairdryer.
- Condition it once it is completely dry.
Protecting leather from rain
A leather protector spray makes water bead on the surface; re-apply every few months. Conditioning regularly also helps leather shed water.
Frequently asked
Can I wear a leather jacket in the rain?
Yes, in light rain. Hang it on a shaped hanger to dry naturally when you get home.
Are roll-top backpacks waterproof?
The roll-top closure keeps rain out of the opening better than a zip, but the leather itself is still only water-resistant.
